On August 3-7, 2022, in the Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, the annual Career Fair and Convention for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) was held.
The #NABJNAHJ22 Convention and Career Fair, draws leaders and influencers from the media, business, health, arts, and entertainment industries, is the preeminent convention for journalism education, career development, networking, and industry innovation. The best journalists, media executives, journalism instructors, public relations experts, and students came together for the event.
Recruiters from leading media firms and journalism institutions from around the nation and the world attended the Career Fair. Each year, thousands of guests have heard from innovators, motivators, and business titans who have gathered to bestow their knowledge upon the attendees. President George W. Bush, and then-Senator Barack Obama, are some of the leaders who have attended the convention.
The NABJ chapter from Alcorn State University attended the convention to represent the University. DeJona Sims, President of Alcorn’s NABJ Chapter, and Mekiyla Brown, Treasurer of Alcorn’s NABJ Chapter, both spent four days at the event learning from mentors with experience in the television industry. Brown stated, “I had a life changing experience at the convention. I met so many interesting people and I learned an excessive amount about my filed of choice.”
Prestigious organizations such as CNN, NBC, and ABC assisted and provided information to the students who attended. Students had access to seminars that educated them on the various challenges that journalists confront daily.
