THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

STARRING: KEKE PALMER, SZA, KATT WILLIAMS, LIL REL HOWERY

DIRECTED BY: LAWRENCE LAMONT

RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 15, 2025

“One of Them Days” is a newly released comedy which debuted on January 15th and is 1 hour and 37 minutes long. The movie was directed by Lawrence Lamont and Issa Rae, and starred Keke Palmer and singer SZA, who made her acting debut.

The movie is a tale of two friends who are forced to make a hefty amount of cash by the end of the day after Alyssa’s (SZA) boyfriend spends their rent money on his own clothing line. Not only are they on a hustle for money, but Dreaux (Keke Palmer) is also on a quest to land a new job which adds to the list of activities and other mishaps the duo falls into such as near-death experiences, drama, and payback.

Though the plot may seem very generic, the movie definitely surprised me. Palmer has always been a great actress, but I believe that she represented her character very well. She portrayed a young woman in the early stage of learning who she wants to be, which is the perfect stigma for an actress such as herself, and in fact she reminded me a lot of her character from “True Jackson, VP.” Aside from Palmer, SZA also did exceptionally well, considering the fact that this was her first acting gig. The dialogue in the movie seemed very authentic, which I believe made the movie more amusing. A lot of the characters in the movie were also casted perfectly, or more specifically SZA’s portrayal of her character who was a “street smart, but not book smart”, and Katt Williams’ character “Lucky,” who was a comedic side character. I believe having such a well casted team is very rare in a lot of movies, and especially rare for a movie that has a lot of familiar faces which are thrown in purely for engagement.

Though I would have preferred less predictable scenes and a less predictable outcome, I loved the sarcastic humor of the film and believe it definitely did exceed my expectations.
