A Smile a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Bobby McFerrin once sang, “Don’t worry, be happy.” And I couldn’t agree with him more. Honestly, life is too short to be mean, cruel, or bitter for no apparent reason. No one needs that kind of negativity. It is always best to surround yourselves with positive people who are trying to do positive things. Negative people do nothing but bring you down. Positive people, on the other hand, support you and lift you up. They are the ones that are there for you, through your downfalls and success.
My overall mentality about life is that things could be worse. We all know that it has its many ups and downs, and some people have it harder than others. Regardless of what a person may be going through, it is always okay to be nice to others. You may never know what the next person is going through. The best remedy for someone having a bad attitude or bad day, in my opinion, is a nice smile from someone else. I was always taught that a nice smile goes a long way. There’s no point in frowning all the time. (I hear it gives you wrinkles anyway.) Nobody is perfect; we all have issues and problems that we deal with on a daily basis. Always remain humble towards everyone that you meet.

Happiness – such a small word with such a great meaning. There is so much in life to be happy about. To you it may mean riding a roller coaster at the amusement park; welcoming a newborn baby into the world; going on a romantic vacation getaway with your significant other; or even eating a Snickers candy bar. To me, happiness is simply being able to wake up in the mornings in a warm bed with a roof over your head, or being able to walk with your own two feet instead of being confined to a wheelchair, or even seeing loved ones that you don’t get along with that well. If you are reading this article, you should be happy that God blessed you with eyes to see and the ability to read. Most times, people don’t care for the small things in life; instead they are only concerned with the big stuff. However, in order to truly value the big things in life, you have to first appreciate the small things.

If you want to see or make a change in life, you have to start with yourself. So when you have time, just take a minute, sit down and reflect on what you appreciate and love about your life, the people in it, and yourself. I truly believe that you will have so much more to be happy about after thinking things over. Hopefully, this will help you see the more positive sides of things.

Smile more and be nicer towards people that you meet and more than likely you’ll get the same in return. Soon after, you’ll feel better and they will too.
