THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Actor Spotlight: Amy Schumer

Every decade or so there comes a comic who has tremendous talent that transcends all races and cultures. That comic you may ask is comedienne Amy Schumer. Schumer’s ability to use every day situations and turn them into hilarious stories is legendary. She has been mentioned in the same breath as comedy legends Lucille Ball, Carl Burnett and Phyliss Diller. Schumer is the latest ‘New Thing’ in Hollywood and she is taking full advantage of the opportunities that are coming her way. She is the creator of Inside Amy Schumer which airs on Comedy Central and she is the star of the 2015 run away hit Trainwreck which has grossed over $110 million worldwide.

Schumer was born in Manhattan, New York on June 1, 1981 to Gordon and Sandra Schumer who are both business owners. Schumer attended South Side High School in Rockville Centre, New York and after graduation attended Towson University where she received a degree in Theater in 1999.

Her first stand up comedy gig was on June 1, 2004 where she performed at the Gotham Comedy Club where people began to take notice of her. Between 2007-2012 Schumer was a recurring guest on the Fox News show Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld. Also during that time period she appeared in Comedy Central’s Reality Bites Back in 2008, she appeared in an advertising campaign for Butterfinger and she had her first Comedy Central Presents special which aired on April 2, 2010. Schumer’s career really began to skyrocket when she released her debut stand up comedy album in 2011 entitled “Cutting”. After that the offers came pouring in but none more important than the offer that Comedy Central presented to her. The network offered Schumer an opportunity to have her own sketch comedy show entitled Inside Amy Schumer which debuted to high ratings on April 30, 2013. Even today it is still one of Comedy Central’s highest rated shows.  Success seemed to follow Schumer after that because she hosted the 2015 MTV Movie Awards and also in 2015 she wrote and starred in her first leading role in the successful movie Trainwreck.

Schumer currently resides on the Upper West Side in New York City.
