Actor Spotlight: Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey is one of Hollywood’s rare gems.  He has been a mainstay in Hollywood films for the past 20 years. His versatility amongst the roles he takes makes him stand out from the other thespians in the acting field. As one of Hollywood’s $20 million a film men, he is known for his professionalism and vitality.

McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas on November 4, 1969 to Mary Kathleen, a former kindergarten teacher and James McConaughey, who was a businessman who ran a oil pipe supply shop. McConaughey moved to Longview, Texas in 1980 and four years later graduated from Longview High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Texas at Austin College of Communication and graduated in four years with a degree in Radio-Television Film.

McConaughey began his acting career in 1991, appearing in television commercials, including one for the Austin, Texas daily newspaper, the Austin American Statesman which is credited as his first speaking role. By the early 2000s, he was frequently cast in romantic comedies, including The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, both of which were successful at the box office. In 2005, McConaughey was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive”. In 2006, he starred in the critically acclaimed We Are Marshall as head coach Jack Lengyal.

At the 86th  Academy Awards McConaughey won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. The movie thus far has grossed $55.2 million at the box office. It’s initial budget was a mere $5 million.

McConaughey  is married to Brazilian model Camila Alves. The couple have three children together, sons, Levi and Livingston and daughter Vida. The family resides in Austin, Texas.
