Actor’s Spotlight: Zazie Beetz

Zazie Beetz was born on May 25, 1991 in Berlin, Germany. Beetz’s father is a German cabinet maker who immigrated to the United States in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her mother is an African American social worker from New York. Her parents met while working upstate and later married but separated when she was very young. Beetz attended school in Berlin until moving with her family to New York City, speaking both German and English at home. Growing up in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, she became interested in acting while attending Muscota New School and performed in community theaters and on local stages. She graduated from LaGuardia Arts High School in 2009, and attended Skidmore College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in French language in 2013.

She is best known for her role in the FX comedy-drama series Atlanta. Because of her standout performance in the show, she received a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In 2017, she appeared in the disaster film Geostorm. In 2018, she played the Marvel Comics’ character, Domino, in the Deadpool sequel and in 2019, she co-starred in the psychological thriller film, Joker, playing his love interest.

Even though her filmography is brief, Beetz’s career is just beginning with many opportunities to come.
