THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Agriculture Seminar Class Welcomes Floyce Thomas from the J. D. Boyd Library

On Wednesday, February 8th, Dr. Wandra Arrington (to the right in the picture), Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, welcomed Floyce Thomas (to the left in the picture), J. D. Boyd Library Serials Librarian/Library Tech Service Director and Library LIS Liaison, to speak to her AG 486 Agriculture Seminar class.

Her presentation dealt with how to do college-level research so students can complete class assignments. Key points were discussed on how to find articles that are, “Peer-Reviewed,” for research papers. Additionally, information was discussed on how to cite articles and tips for writing in the APA writing style format. Students were encouraged to apply for the “Library Access Card” which will allow them to be able to log into the library resources on and off campus. An open invitation was given by Thomas to visit the library and connect with librarians for one-on-one training. Upon completion of the training, students will be able to use the service tools and locate articles using the online database modules. The discussion also highlighted the various resources available to support the educational learning process for a successful career outcome. The University Library has a wide variety of services to support class instruction including one-on-one research consultations with students or faculty researchers. The Alcorn students, faculty, and staff can access information resources and use them effectively.

For over 5 years, Dr. Arrington has invited the J.D. Boyd Library representatives to speak to her Agriculture classes. The students have learned that the library’s mission is to provide services, resources, and assistance to them, faculty, and staff. Utilizing the library is very important to the success of undergraduate and graduate students at Alcorn.
