Agriculture Students Moderate for USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) Spring Distance Learning Seminar

On Tuesday, February 21st, two Alcorn State University (ASU) Agriculture students, Tiras Jones and Zyria Queen, both Senior Agribusiness Management majors, participated in the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) Distance Learning Seminar program.

The students were moderators for the first USDA ERS Distance Learning seminar titled “Household Food Security in the United States in 2021”. Laura Hales, an Agricultural economist, was the presenter.

The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) will hold Distance Learning Seminars that began on Tuesday, February 21st, and will conclude on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. The program consists of 8 seminars.

The Distance Learning program is designed to share research seminar topics with undergraduate and graduate students via Zoom, covering emerging issues in Agriculture, food, the environment, and rural America. In support of the ERS mentoring initiative program, two students from an 1890 Land-grant institution were chosen to serve as moderators for each seminar.

The Alcorn coordinators for the event were Dr. Wandra Arrington and Dr. Edmund Buckner, both Agriculture Professors in the Department of Agriculture at ASU.

Dr. Arrington stated, “The ERS Distance Learning event will help Alcorn students improve their communication, leadership, mentorship, and professional skills. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with USDA-ERS on future events.”

If you are interested in taking part in this event with your students, the Zoom link will work for all ERS seminars this Spring. The third seminar is on Tuesday, March 7th, at 2:00 pm Eastern, titled “Foreign Direct Investment in Africa: Recent Trends Leading up to the African Continental Free Trade Area”. The student moderators will be from Virginia State University.
