With The Internet’s third album, ‘Ego Death’, the band has gotten more personal with its fan base. Through twelve tracks the album goes into deep detail about some of lead singer Syd’s personal life. The sound of the CD is different from the last two. The band has definitely come into their own sound with this album. It has a very Neo-Soul, chill vibe, but with more Hip-Hop than in previous projects.
The first track of the album, “Get Away,” starts right away with Syd’s soft voice. It pulls listerners in with a tribal bass in the verses. During the song Syd sings about a woman her girlfriend thinks she is cheating with, though the woman is only sweet company. The twelfth track, “Penthouse Cloud,” is one of the slowest songs on the album with a strong instrumental that clears a way for Syd’s strong lyrics and seductive voice.
The album features several well known artists on its tracks.“Gabby,” the sassy second track layers Syd’s voice with Janelle Monet’s over a sample on the second half of the song. “Go With It,” a hyped up Hip-Hop track, features Vic Mensa while amping up player anthems. The producer Kaytranada makes an appearance on the seven minute track “Girl.” Tyler the Creator’s vocals are prominent throughout “Palace/Curse.”
Ego Death has given The Internet their own place in the R&B genre with rich instrumentation from the live band and clear melodies from Syd. The album not only touched the genres of R&B and Hip-Hop, but the band explored Funk and Jazz. Once you listen to the first song, you will want to play the entire album right away. But be warned that the album is highly explicit. ‘Ego Death’ receives 8 stars out of 10 stars.
