Alcorn Hosts Annual Fall High School Day 2016

On Saturday, September 10th, 2016 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm Alcorn State University hosted its annual Fall High School Day at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex on the Lorman campus. This is the first of two high school days that will take place this academic year. The event is designed to inform high school students and transfer students about the different academic programs being offered throughout the University as well as give them a historical view of the oldest black land grant institution in the United States.

Schools from all over Mississippi attended the event such as Provine High School, Wilkinson County High School, Clarksdale High School, Yazoo City High School, Jim Hill High School, Madison Central High School, Newton High School, Jefferson County High School, Brookhaven High School, Hattiesburg High School and Morton High School. Each academic school was available to the students so that they may browse around and speak with a representative and ask any questions regarding any major that they may be interested in. Rickellia McCoy, a Senior attending Newton High School in Newton, Mississippi stated, “I think it’s very important for a school to be family oriented because you don’t see this every day. From my brief time here I have observed that Alcorn has that welcoming feel to it.”

To keep the students entertained the Alcorn State University cheerleaders performed several routines and The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite’s drum line showed the invited guests just why they are the best band in the land. The Greeks of Alcorn participated in a Stroll Off and a throwback fashion show was presented by The TREND Modeling Squad. There were also special performances by The Hattiesburg High School Cheerleaders and the dance group Cut Up from Fayette, Mississippi as well as the Southern Queens from Wilkinson County. Amber Wilson, a Senior form Madison Central High School in Madison, Mississippi stated, “This event was very interesting and entertaining. I am seriously considering attending here next fall.”

After the event concluded the students were given tickets to attend the Brave’s Football team’s first home game of  the season upon which they beat the Hornets of Alabama State 21-18. Larry Sanders, an Instructor of Mass Communications at Alcorn State stated, “This is a wonderful outing that the University puts on for these prospective students every year at this time. It is such an honor for me to talk to these young people and try to encourage them to make Alcorn thier institution of choice for the next four years.”  For more information on High School Day contact www.alcorn.edu or 1-800-222-6790.
