THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Alcorn Hosts Student Health Fair

Alcorn’s  Department of Health and Disability Services held its 6th Annual Fall Health Fair in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm on November 4th, 2015 on the Lorman campus. Twenty vendors from surrounding cities came to advise students and visitors about different health risk factors and how to prevent them. Alcorn’s very own A.S.U. HEREOS (Health Educators Reaching Other Students), ASU Spark and BSN nursing students from the Natchez campus also provided health education to those in attendance.

“I think these kinds of events are a great way for students and faculty to learn more about things that concern our every day health. We can get engaged with students and inform them on different health tips,” stated Tameria Rule, a senior Nutrition and Dietetics major.

The event brought professionals from different areas of the health and wellness field. Many of the booths included dental screenings, mental health checks, sexual health, blood pressure checks, organ donor sign-ups, Body Mass Index (BMI) checks and several more. Larry Sanders, an Instructor of Mass Communications at Alcorn stated, “I look forward to this event every year. It is a tremendous event that helps faculty, staff and students.” Representatives from Mary Kay offered beauty and make-up tips and informed the participants about their skin care line and how to properly cleanse their faces when removing make-up.

Dorothy Davis, Director of Health and Disability Services at Alcorn stated, “We want students to know that overall health and wellness is important. These kind of events aid in promoting health and wellness on campus and surrounding areas.”
