Alcorn Presents BraveFest Week 2017

Alcorn’s Student Government Association presented BraveFest Week 2017 between Monday, April 17, 2017 through Saturday, April 22, 2017.

BraveFest Week was filled with fun engaging events that allowed the student body to relax and enjoy themselves. On Monday, April 17th, students were able to attend SkateFest that began at 6:30 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium (Old Gym). Students gathered to skate at their own risk accompanied by sounds from DJSuperStarSwazy.

Tuesday, April 18th brought the Brave Choice Awards which began at 7:00 pm in the Campus Union Ballroom. The Choice Awards included categories such as Coach of the Year, Fraternity of the Year, Staff of the Year, Faculty of the Year and Organization of the Year to name a few. The event was hosted by Alcorn State University students, Aliah Kinnard and Jonathan Collins. The winners were given a plaque signifying their accomplishment.

Wednesday, April 19th was an exciting day because of the Braves’ Carnival that began at 5:00 pm on the Campus Green. Students were able to eat free snacks such as popcorn, funnel cakes and drinks. While some students snacked, many were able to enjoy the bullride and spacewalk while listening to the sounds of DJSuperStarSwazy.

The Brave Fashion Showdown was held on Thursday, April 20th at 7:00 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium. The Fashion Show was presented by The T.R.E.N.D. Modeling Squad and featured styles from Ora’s Boutique, Raymond Banks’ “Gentlemen’s Touch”, D.L. Smith, Fashion Stylist, and many more.

The BraveFest Concert was held on April 21st at 8:00 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gym with the Legendary AG on the mic. The concert consisted of Rich Homie Quan, DJ Luke Nasty and Mike Stlyez. Student Government Association (SGA) Sophomore President Elect 2017-2018 Stephen Holt stated, “Since I will be in SGA next year, these events allowed me to know how the events are to operated. I was also able to participate in and enjoy them as well.”

The week concluded on April 22nd with a Stompdown Stepshow beginning at 6:00 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium. The show included unique, competitive performances by Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Phi Alpha, Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi. The winners of the competition were Zeta Phi Beta and Alpha Phi Alpha.

Freshman Education major Autumn Peavie stated, “I had a wonderful time during BraveFest Week. The activities put together were very fun and my friends and I tried to attend them all.”
