THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Alcorn State Hosts Its Annual Fall High School Day 2015

On Saturday, September 26, 2015 Alcorn State University hosted its Fall 2015 High School Day. This day was set aside to allow high school students, transfer students, chaperones and parents an opportunity to visit the campus and preview all that Alcorn has to offer.

The day started off extraordinary because nearly 4,000 students registered for the event, a vast contrast and all time high in comparison to previous years. Festivities took place beginning at 8:00 am at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex and ended at 12:00 pm.

Upon entering the building, guests were greeted with warm smiles and cheerful faces from Alcorn’s faculty, staff and student ambassadors. High school seniors were able to apply for admission and schedule campus tours if they so desired. After registering, inside the complex were a variety of tables and booths set up for each school and department at Alcorn including: Biology, Advanced Technology, Nursing, Mathematics, Communications, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Agriculture and many more. Here, students received informative sessions and helpful visits with departmental representatives. Administrators, faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students were available to answer any of the prospective student’s questions concerning admission, scholarships, financial aid, academic programs, extracurricular activities, and residential life.

Jamisha Brown, a junior from Madison High School in Tallulah, Louisiana stated, “At first I really didn’t know what I wanted to go to college for. I knew that I wanted to go to college but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to major in. But after talking to students enrolled in the Nursing program here at Alcorn, I am really thinking about coming here and majoring in Nursing.”

Many students and participants were excited to come out and learn more about Alcorn. Jaydon Davis, a sixth grader from Port Gibson, MS exclaimed, “I love Alcorn! This is the best school ever.”

Attendees also got to see and enjoy various performances by the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band, GQ Modeling Squad, Dance Distinction, ASU Cheerleaders, Jefferson County Cheerleaders, and ASU Greeks.

At the conclusion of the day’s events, visitors were able to witness a battle on the gridiron and the feature attraction of the day, the Alcorn State Braves versus the Concordia College Hornets’  (Selma) football game at Spinks-Casem Stadium at 2:00 pm.
