Alcorn Students Visits Twin Lakes Camp for a Brave Retreat

On Friday, March 28th -Sunday, March 30th, Alcorn State University’s (ASU) Office of Career Services took students to Twin Lakes Camp and Conference Center in Florence, Mississippi for a weekend getaway.

The main purpose of the Brave Retreat was for students to learn more about themselves and bond with one another. The Twin Lakes Camp provided numerous outdoor activities for the students which challenged them to become their best selves.

Upon arrival at the facility the students were given a choice to Zipline and Rock Climb or Workout with the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). The students who chose to Zipline, did so from 50 feet in the air moving from one platform to the next. Those who choose to rock climb did so from an indoor 20-foot bouldering wall specially designed for climbing. The individuals who chose to work out with the ROTC did challenging yet helpful exercises specifically designed to build their conditioning.

After dinner, guest speaker Thaddeus Payton, spoke to the attendees with encouraging words about knowing and learning about themselves. To better emphasis his points that he made throughout his presentation, he asked the students to write about themselves in a positive light, which helped them to open up and share more. Once the presentation concluded, the students walked to a bonfire and sat amongst the fire and conversed with one another.

On Saturday, March 29th, the students heard physician, Margarett Wilson, and a variety of other motivational speakers who graduated from Alcorn, share stories about being students at Alcorn, and their hardships and triumphant victories throughout their lives. India Stenson, a Sophomore Mass Communications major, stated, “These presentations helped me tremendously. I enjoyed the stories from the speakers, all of whom I could relate to.” After the presentations, students had a fun filled day playing dodgeball and kayaking.
