The Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) Delta Devils (0-4,0-1) came to Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday, September 28th at 5:00 pm looking for their first victory of the young 2019 football season against the current Eastern Division leaders, the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (3-2,2-0). Luckily, the Braves were accepting all comers.
Alcorn jumped on the scoreboard first in the first quarter when Wide Receiver LeCharles Pringle caught a 19 yard pass from Quarterback Felix Harper and with Kicker Corey McCullough’s extra point the score was 7-0, Braves.
ASU didn’t score again until early into the second quarter at the 14:25 mark when Wide Receiver Chris Blair scored on a 69 yard strike from Harper and with McCullough’s PAT (point after attempt) the score was now 14-0, Braves. The Delta Devils decided to make it a contest when they scored at the 7:31 mark when Quarterback Dejerric Bryant scampered into the end zone on a 1 yard run and with Kicker Hayden Schuster’s extra point the score was now 14-7, Braves. Alcorn, not to be detoured, came right back and put points on the board at the 3:03 mark when Harper connected on a 26 yard strike to Wide Receiver Juan Anthony Jr. and with a McCullough extra point the score was now 21-7, Braves. MVSU kept fighting as they scored right before the half at the 00:07 mark when Bryant hit Wide Receiver Johnny Wilson with a 16 yard pass but Schuster missed the PAT making the score 21-13, Braves.
Alcorn came out in the third quarter with a new sense of urgency when McCullough booted a 33 yard field goal to make the score 24-13, Braves. The Delta Devils looked like a much different team from years past as they came to Lorman to prove that they could hang with the big boys. MVSU scored at the 7:17 mark when Wide Receiver Marcus Kidd caught a 9 yard pass from Bryant to make the score 24-19, Braves. Valley went for a 2-point conversion but Alcorn stuffed Tight End Varandre White at the goal line. The Braves seemed to gain momentum with this as they scored yet again at the 3:46 mark when Pringle caught a 39 yard pass from Harper and with McCullough’s successful extra point the score was now 31-19, Braves. Wasting little time, Alcorn scored 1 minute and 34 seconds later when Blair caught a 52 yard pass from Harper and with a McCullough extra point the score was now 38-19, Braves.
The fourth quarter seemed to be the nail in the coffin for the Delta Devils when the Braves scored at the 3:57 mark when the dynamic duo united once again when Pringle caught an 8 yard pass from Harper and with McCullough’s extra point the final score was 45-19, Braves.
ASU’s Offense flourished with Quarterback Felix Harper completing 21 passes for 396 yards and 6 touchdowns. Running Back Trey Turner had 64 yards rushing while Niko Duffy had 54 yards rushing. Wide Receiver Chris Blair had 144 receiving yards with 2 touchdowns and LaCharles Pringle had 86 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns. The Defense came up big also with Defensive Back Qwynnterrio Cole and Linebacker Daimen Anderson leading all tackles with 9.
The Braves’ next contest will be in Montgomery, Alabama at Hornet’s Stadium against the Alabama State University (ASU) Hornets (2-2,1-0) on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00 pm.
