THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Alcorn’s SGA Hosts Welcome Week

School is back in session. Put on by Alcorn State University’s (ASU) Student Government Association (SGA), Welcome Week is something students look forward to every year. The event’s purpose is for First-time Freshman and transfer students to learn more about the campus and how to get involved. One of the easiest ways to do that is by joining an organization.

On Wednesday, August 24th at 6:00 pm the Student Organization Fair and Showcase took place in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom. Following previous events such as roller skating and a silent headphone party, the Organization Fair managed to have a great turnout. From community service, modeling, academics, business, and psychology, the Fair had a wide range of organizations that catered to the student’s interests.

Sophomore, Zaria Tillman from Indianola, Mississippi and a representative of The Coalition of Women of Color in STEM, stated, “The purpose of our club is to help individuals with internships, perfecting their resume, job placement, and to build sisterhood amongst ourselves.”

Another aspect of the Organization Fair is to not only get involved but to help students succeed in the future. Clubs and organizations teach responsibility, leadership, and teamwork and by joining clubs and networking, students can become more comfortable with themselves and their peers on campus.

“Our advisor, Career Specialist, Mr. Roy Burr, has done a great job with a lot of students including myself. Since being in this organization my Freshman year I’ve gotten three scholarships from this organization alone,” says Junior, Taylor Leflore from Pewaukee, Wisconsin and Co-Vice President and Secretary for the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS).
