Alpha Chi Alpha Initiates Newest Members

The Alpha Chi Alpha Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta inducted new members into its Mass Communications Honor Society on Monday, April 19th at 2 pm via Zoom.

Lambda Pi Eta is the official Honor Society of the National Communications Association and was established in 1985. The Alpha Chi Alpha Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta at Alcorn State University (ASU) received its charter on October 3, 2016.

The Spring 2021 initiates were, Morgan Bridgeman, Majesty Ferguson, Inesha Jackson, Aubriana Lowery, Nicee Olayinkascott, Laura Reed, Emmanuel Ufio, and Kyla Washington.

The Master of Ceremony for the program was Dr. Eric Dogini, Professor of Mass Communications at ASU, who started the program by welcoming all of the guests in attendance. Dr. Dogini then went on to introduce the current President of the Chapter, Destyni Bowie, who shared the history and the goal of Lambda Pi Eta. New President-Elect, Morgan Bridgeman, then shared with the audience the purposes of the Honor Society.

Judge Toni Terrett, Professor of Mass Communications at ASU, followed that by introducing the guest speaker for the program, Attorney Shari Gladney. Gladney is a ’89 graduate of Alcorn where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications. Gladney is currently an attorney in the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender’s Office where she works in the Post-Conviction Division.

Gladney spoke to the initiates about how they have a bright future ahead of them and advised them to partake in what the entire world has to offer by stating, “Don’t be so rigid; travel aboard and see as much of the world as possible when you get out of college.”

After those encouraging words, Dr. Dogini opened the floor to other distinguished guests to give a few inspiring words to the initiates. Dr. Felecia M. Nave, 20th President of Alcorn State University, Dr. Babu Patlolla, Dean of School of Arts and Sciences at ASU, and Dr. Sheren Sanders, Director of the Honors Program at ASU, all said a few words to the students.

The program then moved to the Faculty Governing Board of Alpha Chi Alpha who would share the three modes of persuasion which is what Lambda Pi Eta stands for. Assistant Professor of Mass Communications at ASU, Larry Sanders, spoke about Logos, Judge Terrett discussed Pathos, and Dr. Jerry Domatob, Professor of Mass Communications at ASU, concluded with Ethos.

The time had finally come for the new initiates to be officially inducted into the Alpha Chi Alpha Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. Each new initiate lit a candle and recited a pledge that they would accept the challenges that come with being members of Lambda Pi Eta and will maintain the standards set forth by the society.
