Hali Jones is a proud native of Fort Worth, Texas who now resides in Little Rock, Arkansas. She is a 2017 graduate of Crowley High School in Crowley, Texas. In 2020, Jones earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Alcorn State University (ASU). While at ASU she was a student athlete (Track & Field), a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the Mass Communications Club, the National Society of Leadership and Success and the National Association of Black Journalists. Jones also held a work study job for the Marketing and Communications Department.
During her trek at Alcorn, she received the Commissioners Honor Roll Student Athlete of the Week, was a 2x All Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Academic and a 2x Dean’s List scholar. Jones is currently attending the University of Arkansas where she will be earning her Master’s degree in Engineering in 2025.
Upon graduating from ASU, Jones relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas in 2021 where she began her career in Human Resources for Amazon. After working for Amazon for two years she left and went to Nucor where she currently works as a Human Resources Administrator for her division of the Nucor Insulated Panel Group (NIPG).
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ALCORN?
I’d like to say that Alcorn choose me. As a kid I heard of Historically Black Colleges and Universities but had little knowledge of them so when I received a Track and Field scholarship from Alcorn I stepped out on faith and accepted the offer. Alcorn has blessed me with many opportunities and gave me the growth that I needed to excel in my future endeavors. I am very thankful for my time at Alcorn and will always remember everything that I learned from my time there.
WHAT ORGANIZATIONS WERE YOU A PART OF?
I was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, National Society of Leadership and Success, the Mass Communications Club and the National Association of Black Journalists.
HOW HAS ALCORN HELPED PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR CAREER?
Alcorn prepared me for my career by giving my great professional development opportunities and enhancing my skill set to make me a better candidate for the workforce. I learned at Alcorn what it meant to be a leader and the importance of my voice, to think critically and independently while gaining new knowledge and building character.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT ALCORN?
I enjoyed the people of Alcorn. Alcorn is one big family and as an out-of-state student who knew no one when I arrived in Mississippi, I left Alcorn knowing that I had a family. Alcorn is a fun place with a great atmosphere.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR CURRENT OR FUTURE STUDENTS ON ‘THE YARD’?
My advice for current or future students would be to enjoy your time on campus because it will go by quickly. Above all, never give up on your dreams and goals even when faced with adversity. Stay true to yourself, persevere, and remember that failure is not fatal, it’s the courage that counts.
