There, she not only covers underreported communities in Southeast Mississippi but also coaches aspiring journalists in the program. Through her work, Gill continues to amplify important stories that inspire the next generation of reporters.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ALCORN?

Being at Alcorn, I felt like I was at home. It was a family environment, the teachers were hands-on, and I met some amazing people who I now call my lifelong friends.

WHAT ORGANIZATIONS WERE YOU A PART OF?

Alcorn State Cheer Team, Cheer Psi

HOW HAS ALCORN HELPED PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR CAREER?

Alcorn prepared me for my career by actually putting me on camera, giving great feedback, teaching me how to edit, as well as making me complete projects in a timely manner. A lot of the things we learned and did in the Communications department made me more comfortable being on camera as well as working behind it.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT ALCORN?

I enjoyed the environment the most. Being around people on the same path who look like me was very motivational. I like how the teachers asked what you were most interested in and pushed you to do more with that.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR CURRENT OR FUTURE STUDENTS ON ‘THE YARD’?

My advice is to be so good, they can’t ignore you. Always put your best foot forward in whatever you do. Remember, if you play small, you stay small. Keep going, keep shining. You inspire people who pretend to not even see you. Also, build your resume/portfolio now so that you have something to show when you’re looking for a job.
