THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Artist Spotlight: Lecrae

Gospel phenom, Lecrae Devaughn Moore of Houston, Texas was born October 9, 1979.

With never meeting his father, he was raised by his single mother which often caused him to move around a lot. Lecrae would attend church with his grandmother but he felt like church wasn’t for him.

Due to his rough childhood, Lecrae gravitated towards Rap as a provenance of hope.  But rap wasn’t as accessible for him because of his Christian background so he would have to go and sneak late at night to watch and study the rap culture.

Lecrae wasn’t always a saint. In his teenage years, he was taking drugs, fighting, being promiscuous and getting arrested. It wasn’t until a Christian conference and a life changing accident that he decided to convert his life to Christ.

From that moment forward Lecrae dedicated his life and music to Christianity. Five years after his dedication, at the age of 25, he released his first album entitled ‘Real Talk.’ This album reached No. 29 on the Gospel Billboard Albums chart and charted for 12 weeks. It also received a Stellar award nomination.

Lacrae is one of the biggest gospel crossover artist there is. The lyrist knows how to convey his truth and beliefs through any sort of music, whether it is Gospel or Hip-Hop and that is why a lot of secular artist respect him. His co-founded record label, Reach Record’s mission, is to change the way people see the world and through his music you can tell that he is unashamed of spreading the Gospel.

In Lecrae’s 8 studio albums, singles and mixtapes he has done songs with many different non-Christian artist such as Kendrick Lamar, Paul Wall, Chaka Khan and Big K.R.I.T. to name a few.

One of his biggest hits off of his newly released album ‘All Things Work Together’, “Blessings” featuring Ty Dolla $ign reached number 11 on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart back in May. On ‘All Things Work Together’ you are expected to hear true freedom through self-expression, depression and his blessings.

Lecrae and his wife Darragh Moore and  their three children currently live in Atlanta, Georgia.
