Artist Spotlight: Lil Nas X

Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X, was born on April 9, 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia. Today he’s known for his #1 charting Billboard single “Old Town Road” which is a blend between Country and Trap. Lil Nas began his career as an internet personality on Twitter and gained popularity through his Nicki Minaj fan account “@NasMaraj.” In 2015, Nas caught an even bigger buzz thanks to his viral tweets and other fan page “FactsAboutNM.” On his page he got the most attention from his “scenario threads.” Through these accounts, Lil Nas  gathered a large following and the blessings from his followers to begin his rap career.

In 2018, he began uploading songs to SoundCloud. On December 3, 2018, Lil Nas released the hit “Old Town Road.” It wasn’t until 2019 that the song would go viral due to the “Yeehaw Challenge” meme on the app TikTok. It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 83 and later climbed up to the number 1 spot. “OTR” also debuted on the Hot Country Songs chart at number 19 until being controversially removed in March 2019. Due to the song “not embracing enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

Lil Nas X recently turned 20 and is enjoying his much anticipated fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
