Artist Spotlight: Solange

Solange Piaget Knowles was born on June 24, 1986 to Matthew, a music/talent manager and Tina, a stylist and costume designer, Knowles. Solange expressed a love for music at an early age when she temporarily became a backup dancer for the group Destiny’s Child upon which her older sister Beyoncé was a member of.

At the age of 16 she signed with her father’s music label Music World Entertainment and released her first solo album entitled ‘Solo Star’ in 2002. Not only is Knowles a musical talent, but she is an actress as well. She has had several minor acting roles one of which included Bring It On: All or Nothing in 2006.

With basically no notoriety from her first solo album and her lackluster acting career, Knowles didn’t let that detour her from her dreams of becoming a superstar. She released her second studio album entitled ‘Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams’ in 2008 which had a Motown sound of the 60s and 70s. It peaked at number 9 on the Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from critics. In 2012, she followed that up with the 1980s Pop and R&B inspired extended play “True” on Terrible Records and her imprint Saint Records. Her third studio album, which was released in 2016 to widespread critical acclaim entitled “A Seat at the Table”, became her first number one album in the United States. The album’s lead single, “Cranes in the Sky” won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance. Her fourth studio album, ‘When I Get Home’ was released in 2019.

Knowles has one son, Daniel Julez J. Smith, Jr. from a previous marriage. In 2014, Knowles married music video director Alan Ferguson. The family resides in New Orleans, Louisiana.
