Anne Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Hathaway’s mother, Kate McCauley, is a former actress and her father, Gerald, is a labor attorney. She is the second of three children, born between older brother Michael and younger brother Thomas. Her family moved to the Short Hills neighborhood of Millburn, New Jersey when she was six-years-old, where she was eventually raised. She attended Brooklyn Heights Montessori School and Wyoming Elementary School in Millburn. In 1993, she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and became the first teenager admitted into the Barrow Group Theater Company’s acting program. She spent several semesters studying as an English major and political science minor at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
In 2001, Hathaway missed her first college semester filming her cinematic debut as the leading role in the Disney comedy, The Princess Diaries. In 2005, she transitioned to adult roles in the dramas Havoc and Brokeback Mountain. She gained her biggest commercial success in the 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada, and earned her first nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Following her success, she continued with films such as Bride Wars, Alice in Wonderland, The Dark Knight Rises, Les Misérables, Interstellar, The Intern, and Ocean’s 8. She’s the recipient of many awards, including an Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Award, and Golden Globe.
She may have started off as Disney Channel star, but her debut paved the way for her to be regarded as a widely respected actress.
