ASU Hosts Fall High School Day

On Saturday, September 15th, Alcorn State University (ASU) hosted its annual 2018 Fall High School Day in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex on the Lorman campus.

Several high schools came out to participate and introduce students to the different aspects that Alcorn had to offer.  Some of the schools included, Murrah High School from Jackson, Mississippi, Port Gibson High School from Port Gibson, Mississippi, Ridgeland High School from Ridgeland, Mississippi, Warren Central High School from Vicksburg, Mississippi, Greenwood High School from Greenwood, Mississippi, Canton High School from Canton, Mississippi, Gulfport High School from Gulfport, Mississippi, Laurel High School from Laurel, Mississippi, Greenville High School from Greenville, Mississippi, and Choctaw Central High School from Pearl River, Mississippi.

The event began at 2:00 pm with registration and viewing of the different majors and departments offered by the Institution.  The facilitator for the event was Jerrie D. Jackson, Special Activities Coordinator/Recruiter.  At 3:00 pm the floor was cleared so that the General Assembly could commence.  The National Anthem was sung by the ASU Gospel Choir, followed by the Greeting which was done by Interim President, Dr. Donzell Lee and Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, Tracy Cook.

The Welcome was done by Moriah Batiest, Miss Alcorn State University 2018-2019, and Robert Tatum, Student Government Association (SGA) President 2018-2019.  During their welcoming they went on to introduce the rest of the members of the SGA.  Afterwards, entertainment became the main focus of the program.  The ASU Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) came out and did a demonstration, followed by the presentation of a “Black Panther” performance.  High School Cheer teams received the opportunity to participate in the “High School Spirit Challenge” with ASU’s own cheerleaders.

Things took an exquisite turn when different modeling squads, including ASU’s Truly Recognizing and Embracing Natural Differences (T.R.E.N.D.) Modeling Squad made an appearance.  The tempo was increased again by the “Brave’s Battle Royale Dance Competition” and song selections by Alcorn’s very own band, The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite (S.O.D.).  The event finished with the Greek Stroll Off and a display of unity by the Pan-Hellenic Council.

The festivities then moved to Spinks-Casem Stadium at 6:00 pm where the students watched the football game where Alcorn took on the Texas Southern University Tigers. The Braves did not disappoint the crowd in attendance by defeating the Tigers 27-15.
