ASU Student Empowers Women on Campus

Melody Evans is a Junior, Biochemistry major, from Augusta, Georgia. During her free time she enjoys making YouTube videos dedicated to beauty and giving useful college advice. She plans on attending Pharmacy school after graduation to pursue a career as a Pharmacist. While attending Alcorn, one of Evans’ goals is to coordinate events geared towards empowering women on campus. She serves as a Residential Assistant on campus and has hosted several events dedicated to women. She has hosted a “What’s Love Got to Do with It” discussion, a “Pop, Lock and Drop It” workout event, and a “Pillow Talk Girl Talk” discussion.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Evans hosted a “What’s Love Got to Do with It” discussion in collaboration with Miss Alcorn State University 2019-2020, Jahkia Gray, and other Campus Queens on September 30th in Complex D’s Multipurpose Room. This discussion was meant to bring awareness to domestic violence and how to know if you are in an abusive relationship. People shared their own personal experiences while others gave advice. This was a non-judgment zone that allowed young ladies to leave with more knowledge regarding domestic violence.

In addition to bringing awareness to domestic violence, Evans hosted a “Pop, Lock and Drop It” workout event in collaboration with Alcorn’s Black Illusion Dance Company (BIDC) on October 21st in Complex D’s Multipurpose Room. BIDC shared different routines with attendees and halfway through the event, participants were split into two groups to have a dance battle. Each team had ten minutes to orchestrate a dance routine. Once the time was up, each team got the opportunity to show their special dance moves in hopes of winning the competition. This event created a space for students to have fun while being fit.

Lastly, Evans hosted a “Pillow Talk Girl Talk,” event that was an open discussion dedicated to relationships, friendships, and self-worth on November 11th in Complex D’s Multipurpose Room. Students had the option to bring blankets and pillows while milk and cookies were provided. At the event, Evans had a panelist of three young ladies which consisted of Senior, Demetria Walker, Freshman, Kalisha Durr, and Junior, Ayanna Lombard. First, panelists were asked a question and other people were able to state their opinions afterwards. Questions such as, are relationships meant to last forever, what’s your favorite attribute about yourself, and what social customs do you wish would disappear were discussed amongst the group.

Evans expressed how her experience being a member of ASU’s Girl’s Coalition organization influenced her ideas behind her events. She stated, “Girl’s Coalition is an organization that was founded to empower women and as a Residential Assistant I am using what I have learned through that club to impact my residents.” Evans revealed how she enjoys the experience individuals get from her events. She plans on doing more women empowering events in the future, so if you missed any of these events, stayed tuned for what’s to come.
