BraveFest 2023 took place on Alcorn State University’s (ASU) campus from April 3rd-5th. The first event of BraveFest was the Brave Choice Awards which took place in the Student Union Ballroom on April 3rd at 6:00 pm. The event was hosted by Mr. Freshmen, Avantavius Ly’mon, along with several presenters from the Royal Court.
Prior to the event students were sent a form via email asking them to nominate certain individuals on campus for particular categories. Once tabulated, the most people/organizations nominated were placed on a ballot and a few days later, via another email, the students were asked to vote for the winners. Some of the categories were Coach of the Year, Organization of the Year, Class of the Year, Athlete of the Year, Department of the Year, and Student of the Year. The award’s show also featured a performance from the Royal Braves Dance Team.
The winners are as follows.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Fred McNair
MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Jarveon Howard
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Stella Kiptui
BEST DJ: DJ Chemist
CLASS OF THE YEAR: 2024
STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR: Collegiate 100

The Brave Choice Awards combined fun with appreciation. Not only did students enjoy the music and presentation, but they came together to show their support for the nominees.
“I do think students and staff should be recognized more because there are a lot of people here who do the utmost for Alcorn and they’re not honored,” said Ly’mon.
