ASU and SGA Host BraveFest 2021

Alcorn State University (ASU) and the Student Government Association (SGA) hosted its annual BraveFest from April 5th through April 9th.

On Monday, April 5th at 5:00 pm in Spinks-Casem Stadium, the SGA kicked off the week with a Pep Rally featuring the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band. The student body came out to hear their favorite spirit tunes such as the school’s fight songs, “Cherokee” and “Brave Spirit”. The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite also played several current popular songs and a few throwbacks including “Pack Lite” by Queen Naija, “Don’t Leave Me” by Blackstreet, and “American Boy” by Estelle. “It was a fun event to hype up students for BraveFest. Today’s event was a success and I’m sure everyone will enjoy the other events planned for students,” said Bremiya Greenwood, Senior Health Science major.

On Tuesday, April 6th at 7:00 pm, students got the chance to experience an actual skating rink as the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium (Old Gym) was transformed for a skate party. “The SGA really went all out for this one. I honestly expected everyone that had skates to come out and just skate on the gym floor instead they actually set up an actual rink,” said Christopher Kelly, Senior Computer Science major.

Due to inclement weather, the Carnival, originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 7th at 6:00 pm on the Campus Green, was moved to the E. E. Simmons Gymnasium. While the weather may have interfered, students still had the opportunity to enjoy being kids again with fun games, inflatable bounce houses, a mechanical bull, and music.

On Thursday, April 8th, ASU hosted a day party at 6:00 pm on the Campus Green. This event allowed students to come together while adhering to the guidelines for social distancing.

BraveFest was concluded with a concert featuring Jacquees, Flo Milli, and Jay Copes on Friday, April 9th at 7:00 pm in the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

“BraveFest for me, as a Freshman, was a once in a lifetime experience. I have never had so much fun in my life. It opened me up to new experiences and even gave me a chance to go to my first live concert,” Azariah Gillium, Freshman Biology Pre-Nursing major said.
