On Saturday, November 9th, the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (5-5, 4-2) defeated the Texas Southern University (TSU) Tigers (3-6, 2-4) at Spinks-Casem Stadium, 42-21.
This game started out as a close matchup, but the Braves’ offense found a way to pull away with their running game. Texas Southern got on the board first after returning a fumble for 42-yards at the 12:29 mark. The Braves came back with a 60-yard passing touchdown by Quarterback Xzavier Vaughn to Wide Receiver Tyran Warren, who led the Braves in receiving yards with 64 on two catches.
Late in the second quarter, Vaughn, who accounted for three touchdowns—two rushing and one passing—on the day, gave the Braves the lead with a five-yard rushing touchdown. Vaughn also led the Braves’ offense in rushing yards with 130 yards on 13 carries.
TSU would go on to tie the game at halftime with a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Quarterback Jace Wilson. Despite this, the Braves’ offense managed to pull away from the Tigers in the third quarter with two rushing touchdowns by Running Back Jacorian Sewell and Vaughn, making the score 28-14.
The Braves’ defense was also strong as they kept the Tigers scoreless throughout the third quarter and the majority of the fourth, besides a late passing touchdown by Tiger Quarterback Wilson to Wide Receiver Kordell Rodgers. This strong defense by the Braves allowed the offense to tack on two rushing touchdowns by Wide Receivers Omarion Blakes and Anthony Williams, making the final score 42-21.
The Braves look to stay in the win column as they travel to Prairie View, Texas, to take on the Prairie View A&M University Panthers on November 16th at 2:00 pm.
