Braves defeat Tigers with game winning field goal

The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (4-3,3-0) pulled off a 17-15 win against the Grambling State University (GSU) Tigers (3-3,0-2) to remain undefeated in conference play with a game winning field goal.

The Braves got on the board first with a 63-yard rushing touchdown in the middle of the first quarter by Running Back Jacorian Sewell, who led the Braves in rushing yards with 102.

The Tigers answered back with two field goals by kicker Reed Harradine to make the score 7-6. The Braves’ defense managed to keep the Tiger’s offense quiet for the majority of the second and third quarter.

Alcorn’s Linebacker Stemarion Edwards was a force to be reckoned with on the field for the Braves as he came up with an interception in the second quarter and led the Braves’ defense with a total of 12 tackles on the day. Defensive Back Edwin Summerour was second in tackles with seven.

In the second quarter, Braves Quarterback Xzavier Vaughn showcased his arm strength with a 73-yard passing touchdown to Wide Receiver Tyran Warren which extended the lead to 14-6.

However, late in the third quarter GSU’s Running Back Dedrick Talbert had a 3-yard rushing touchdown which made the score 14-12. From here on out it would be field goal versus field goal as the Tiger’s kicker Reed Harradine kicked a 44-yard field goal which gave the Tigers a 14-15 lead.

The Braves wouldn’t let this be their defeat as late in the fourth quarter they made some plays and put themselves in the position for a 27-yard field goal by Kicker Noah Kiani at the 00:07 mark. This made field goal sealed the Braves’ 17-15 win over Grambling.

The Braves get right back on the road this Saturday, October 19th to face off against the Southern University Jaguars in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at A.W. Mumford Stadium at 6:00 pm in hopes of ruining the Jaguar’s homecoming.
