The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (0-0, 0-3) traveled to Starkville, Mississippi on Saturday, September 13th to take on Mississippi State University (MSU) Bulldogs (0-0, 3-0) at Davis Wade Stadium at 5:00 pm. The Braves, looking for their first win of the new season, would have to wait a little longer as they lost to the Bulldogs, 63-0.
Mississippi State came out strong, opening the game with a 75-yard touchdown pass to set the tone. The Bulldogs showed their depth on both sides of the ball, piling up 282 rushing yards and 232 passing yards while converting in the red zone with every possession that they had.
The challenge of facing a Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent seemed daunting for the Braves as they couldn’t get a running game going with the three-headed monster running back stable of Jacorian Sewell (21 yards rushing), Tylon Citizen (18 yards rushing), and Reggie Davis (10 yards rushing).
Alcorn’s aerial assault mimicked its running game with Omarion Blakes having 3 receptions for 31 yards, Jacorian Sewell having 3 receptions for 18 yards and Damien Jones having 4 receptions for 15 yards. Combined quarterbacks Jaylon Tolbert and Andre Washington completed 13 passes for 87 yards.
Defensively, Linebacker Tobias Hinton and Defensive back Elijah Ruffin had 5 tackles each while Safety Brent Barnes had 4.
The Braves begin Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Saturday, September 27th at 6:00 pm against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-0, 1-2) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas at Simmons Bank Field. You can listen to the game on WPRL 91.7 FM (Alcorn’s radio station).
