Braves Lose Season Opener

The Alcorn State Braves (0-1, 0-0) opened up the 2015 season opener in less than glorious fashion. The Braves took on the 16th ranked team in the country, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-0, 0-0) at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia and the Yellow Jackets proved why they’re ranked so high by thrashing Alcorn 69-6.

The first quarter was simply Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets scored first at the 12:50 mark when Justin Thomas ran for a 13 yard score. Harrison Butker kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0 early. At the 8:07 mark the Yellow Jackets scored again as Patrick Scov scampered in on a three yard run making the score 13-0, Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech went for a two point conversion which failed but it didn’t matter because 3 minutes and 23 seconds later the Yellow Jackets scored on a Isiah Willis 3 yard run and with the Harrison Butker extra point the score was now 20-0. Georgia Tech’s scoring assault didn’t stop there because with 2 minutes and 39 seconds left in the first quarter Gergia Tech scored again when Michael Summers caught a 19 yard pass from Justin Thomas and with another Harrison Butker extra point the score was now 27-0. Before the first quarter graciously ended the Yellow Jackets scored at the 1:06 mark when Marcus Marshall ran for a 49 yard score and with the Harrison Butker extra point the score at the end of the first quarter was 34-0, all Yellow Jackets.

The second quarter was more of the same, all Yellow Jackets. At the 11:34 mark Patrick Scov ran for a 21 yard score and with Harrison Butker’s extra point the score was now 41-0. Five minutes and fifteen seconds later the Yellow Jackets scored yet again when Tim Byerly ran for an 8 yard score and with Harrison Butker’s extra kick the score was now 48-0 which ended the half.

The Braves finally got on the score board in the third quarter at the 10:21 mark when Arron Baker scored on a 1 yard run to make the score 48-6 but due to a failed extra point attempt by Haiden McCraney the socre remained 48-6. By this time of the contest the Yellow Jackets, still with a few starters, began putting their second and third team players into the game but that didn’t slow them down because at the 5:29 mark Patrick Skov scored on a 4 yard run and Harrison Butker added the extra point to make the score 55-6. Georgia Tech did not ease off the gas as they showed why they were worthy of the number 16 ranking in the country. With one minute and three seconds left in the third quarter Georgia Tech scored yet again when Marcus Marshall scored on a 64 yard run and with Harrison Butker’s extra point the score was now 62-6.

Thankfully Georgia Tech only scored once in the fourth when Brady Swilling ran for a 1 yard score and with Harrison Butker’s extra point the final score was 69-6. The Braves will be on the road yet again as they take on the Alabama State University Hornets at the New ASU Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama at 6:00 pm on September 12, 2015.
