The Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils (MVSU) (0-6,0-3) looked for their first win of the young season against the Division leading Alcorn State University Braves (ASU) (3-2, 2-0) in Rice-Totten Stadium on Saturday, October 8th at 6:00 pm in Itta Bena, Mississippi to no avail. The Braves, from one week to the next, are beginning to look like the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Champions of old.
Alcorn got on the score board first in the first quarter at the 11:16 mark when Running back Jarveon Howard scored on a 4-yard run and with Kicker/Quarterback Markevion Quinn’s extra point the score was 7-0, Braves.
Valley scored early in the second quarter at the 14:46 mark when Wide receiver Caleb Johnson caught a 44-yard pass from Quarterback Jamari Jones and with Kicker Orlando Fernandez’s PAT (point after attempt) the score was now tied at 7. The Braves responded at the 8:40 mark when Howard scampered in on a 1-yard run to pay dirt and with Quinn’s extra point the score at the half was 14-7, Braves.
With no scoring in the third quarter the Braves left nothing to chance in the fourth as they scored 17 unanswered points making the final score 30-7, Braves. With this loss MVSU remains winless.
Offensive leaders were Quarterback Aaron Allen who completed 22 passes for 300-yards, Howard, who had 66-yards and 2 touchdowns and Wide Receiver Malik Rodgers who had 4 receptions for 88-yards. The Defensive leader was Defensive back Calvontay Key who had 8 tackles and 1 sack.
Alcorn’s next opponent will be Division rival Southern University Jaguars (3-2, 2-1) on Saturday, October 14th at 6:00 pm in Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The game will be on ESPN+ and wprl.org.
