Braves Suffer Heartbreaking Defeat at Southern

The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (3-3, 2-1) were looking to enact some revenge on Western Division rival, the Southern University Jaguars (SU) (4-2,3-1) in Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Saturday, October 15th at 6:00 pm from 2021 when the Jags won their meeting 38-35. The winner of this game could possibly determine who would represent the Western Division in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and both teams knew what was at stake.

The Jags scored first in the first quarter at the 13:57 mark when Wide receiver August Pitre III caught a 37-yard pass from Quarterback Besean McCray and with Kicker Joshua Griffin’s extra point the score was 7-0, Jags.

Southern scored first again to open up the second quarter at the 13:00 mark when Running back Karl Ligon scored on a 36-yard scamper into the end zone and with a successful extra point by Griffin the score was now 14-0, Jags. The Braves finally got things going at the 9:17 mark when Wide receiver Malik Rodgers scored on a 26-yard pass from Quarterback Aaron Allen and with Kicker Noah Kiani’s extra point the score was now 14-7, Jags. The Jags tacked on yet another score at the 5:21 mark when Wide receiver Cassius Allen scored on a 14-yard pass from McCray and with Griffin’s PAT (point after touchdown) the score was now 21-7, Jags. The Braves matched Southern’s score with one of their own before halftime at the 1:33 mark when Wide receiver Monterio Hunt caught a 31-yard pass from Allen and with Kiani’s extra point the score was now 21-14, Braves.

There was no scoring in the third quarter nor was there a need for the Jags to score again to take the victory. Alcorn scored in the fourth quarter when Kiana kicked a 24-yard field goal to make the score 21-17 but it was too little too late as the Braves went down in defeat 21-17.

Alcorn’s offensive leaders were Allen who completed 17 passes for 211 yards, Running back Jarveon Howard, who averaged 3.6 yards per carry, had 79-yards rushing and Wide receiver Malik Rodgers had 6 receptions for 83 yards. The Defensive leader was Linebacker Terreance Ellis who had seven solo tackles.

Alcorn’s next game will be their Homecoming where they’ll play the Texas Southern University Tigers (2-4, 2-2) in Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday, October 22 at 2:00 pm. You can catch the game on ESPN+ and WPRL 91.7 FM.
