On Saturday, November 16th the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (6-5,5-2) claimed victory over Prairie View A&M University (PVU) at Panther Stadium for their second conference win in a row.
The final score for the game was 26-13 with the Braves putting up 13 points in the first quarter. Running Back Jacorian Sewell, who tied with Tight End Tavarious Griffin in rushing yards for the game with 66, started things off for the Braves with a 58-yard rushing touchdown. Defensive Back Geoffrey Mckelton came up with an interception which allowed Kicker Noah Kiani to complete a 50-yard field goal. Kiani would go on to kick another field goal which made the score 13-0 after the first quarter.
Despite this good start in the first quarter by the Braves, the Panthers managed to get on the board at the beginning of the second quarter with a 75-yard punt return by Wide Receiver Coby Cavil making the score 13-7. The Braves, not to be outdone, then scored on a 16-yard passing touchdown from Quarterback Tre Lawrence to Tight End Caleb Anderson making the score 19-7 before the half.
The Panthers went on to score with two field goals by Kicker Guillermo Garcia Rodriquez making the score 19-13. The Braves then sealed the deal with a 22-yard rushing touchdown by Tight End Tavarious Griffin at the 1:52 mark ending the contest.
The Braves’ defense allowed only one touchdown by the Panthers on the day. The remaining of PVU’s points came from field goals. Linebacker Stemarion Edwards led the defense with 11 total tackles and 1 sack. Defensive Back Markel Mclaurin and Linebacker Jacques Drew were behind Edwards with eight. Also to note, Defensive Lineman Malachi Bailey had two and a half sacks.
The Braves’ next and final opponent of the season will be the Jackson State University (JSU) Tigers at Spinks-Casem Stadium on November 23rd at 2:00 pm in the annual ‘Soul Bowl’ game.
