Alcorn State University (ASU) welcomed Avantavis T. Carter as the 68th Student Government Association (SGA) President. The ceremony took place on Monday, September 8th, at 7:00 pm in the Rudolph Waters Business Building. Carter and the Resilient 68th Administration were sworn in before students, faculty, staff, and special guests.
The program began with Judge Tomika Irving, Circuit Judge of the 23rd Circuit Court District of Mississippi, leading the investiture. A pinning ceremony followed. Carter then gave his inaugural address. Sandra Adams, CEO of SARC Personal Development, gave words of encouragement. 67th SGA President Kristian D. Bryant passed the gavel to Carter. Special presentations came next, followed by a leadership charge from Representative Gregory Holloway. Dr. Edward Rice II, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, gave the closing remarks. Rev. Dr. C. Edward “CJ” Rhodes II ended the program with the blessing of the food. The event closed with the Alma Mater and recessional.
In his speech, Carter stated, “Thank you to the student body of ASU, and I will make sure I will work relentlessly to make sure your voices, thoughts and concerns are heard because we all matter.”
Carter is a Senior Elementary Education major from Hazlehurst, Mississippi. He has served as Mister Freshman, Campus Activities Board Liaison, and SGA Business Manager. He joined the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 2025. Carter is also active in Mount Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. His leadership is inspired by faith, especially the scripture: “If God be for you, who can be against you.”
With the ceremony complete, Carter and the Resilient 68th Administration will begin their year of service. Their goal is to amplify student voices and strengthen the Alcorn community.
