THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Dear Ebi: The Advice Column (April 16, 2018)

Dear Ebi,

My boyfriend and I have been together off and on for about 2 years and we are both in band at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) down South. You know probate season is coming to an end but contrary to most people I’m glad it’s over with. My boyfriend crossed Kappa Kappa Psi (the band fraternity) and recently became a Nupe (Kappa Alpha Psi). He’s always had attention issues when it came to keeping his focus on me but the problem has gotten worse lately. Since he got those Greek letters on his chest, he lets these girls and “fans/groupies” get to his head and they seem to come before me nowadays. I literally broke up with him before sending this to you. I felt like it was the right decision for me but I just wanted to get your opinion. Thanks girl.

T.

Dear T,

Girl, you made the right decision. Pledging, for girls and guys, is a strenuous process and it helps when people who are doing so have others in their corner supporting them. You did that for him. Becoming Greek is a great accomplishment and it is possible for the popularity to go to someone’s head. Breaking up with him because of his actions was a good thing for you to do because you do not want to be the only one in the relationship putting forth effort and giving attention. I wish you the best and regardless of if you think that you can still be there for him or not, he’ll see that you are genuine and that you have been genuine this entire time unlike these newfound fans of his.
