Delta Kappa Presents Miss Black and Gold Pageant 2019-2020

On Wednesday, November 13th, at 6:00 pm, the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., held its Miss Black and Gold Pageant in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom.

The pageant consisted of 7 contestants with various backgrounds all vying for the titles of Miss Delta Kappa Chapter 2019-2020 and Miss Black and Gold 2019-2020. At the beginning of the event, the judges and Mistress of Ceremony were introduced. The panel of judges were, Miss Alcorn State University 2019-2020, Jahkia Gray, Derrick Eanochs (Delta Kappa Chapter President), Sanobia Rogers, and Quatangelia Gaines. The MC’s for the evening were Tyrah Ray and Stephanie Ogbonmwan. Each contestant was introduced and completed 4 categories before the winner was announced.

Contestant number 1 was Ebonie Hardin. Hardin is a Junior, Mass Communications major, from San Antonio, Texas. Contestant number 2 was Jayla Fogg, a Sophomore, Psychology major, from Jackson, Mississippi. Contestant number 3 was T’Amber Butler, a Junior, Psychology major, from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Contestant number 4 was Olecia James, a Sophomore, Mass Communications major, from Cleveland, Mississippi. Contestant number 5 was Quanila Trotter, a Sophomore, Biology Pre-Nursing major, from Meridian, Mississippi. Contestant number 6 was Sydney Pulliam, a Senior, Biochemistry major, from Kansas City, Missouri and the last contestant was Kalah Jones, a Senior, Biology Pre-Physical Therapy major, from Laplace, Louisiana.

After each contestant was introduced, the first category was sportswear. Hardin sported shorts and a tank top to go along with a volleyball that she was carrying. Fogg came out sporting a shirt and leggings that matched her tennis racket. Next, Butler also had a volleyball but sported a shirt and leggings as well. Contestant number 4, Jackson, sported a coach’s outfit and clipboard to spice up the competition. Trotter sported a Meridian cheer uniform to show her cheering spirit. Pulliam walked on the stage with calm vibes sporting her yoga pants and sports bra along with her yoga mat and lastly, contestant number 7, Jones showcased her school spirit by wearing an Alcorn State volleyball shirt and shorts.

The next category was a display of the contestant’s talents. Hardin brought her clarinet and played the beginning to “From Time” by Drake featuring Jhene Aiko. With the instrumental in the background she said some spoken words on love. Fogg turned it in a different direction with her dance solo to Fantasia’s “I Believe”. Butler came to the stage and did a praise dance to a Gospel song to take the competition in a spiritual direction. Jackson did a spoken word entitled “Black Woman Steps to the Mic”, which moved the audience.  Trotter also came to the stage for an instrumental performance with her flute to the song “I’m Glad You Came” by The Wanted. Next up was Pulliam who did a contemporary ballet piece and lastly Jones wrapped up the category with a poem by Maya Angelou entitled Phenomenal Woman.

The next category was formal wear. Hardin wore a pink spaghetti strapped dress with ruffles that went into a high low. Fogg wore a royal blue dress with an embroidered top and it had a long train to finish it off.  Butler wore royal blue as well, but the dress was simple with a long train that was finished with a sparkle belt around the waist. Jackson wore a gorgeous green gown that sparkled in the light while Trotter wore a black gown with gold accents that also sparkled but came into a mermaid styled dress. Pulliam kept it simple with her yellow dress that flowed to the floor with an embellished sweetheart neckline and choker. Lastly, Jones wore a black and champagne gown that had pockets that flowed gracefully with a spaghetti strapped top.

The final category of the night was the questionnaire portion where each contestant was asked a question different from the next and they had to answer it to the best of their ability. After that portion, the judges deliberated amongst themselves and came back with the winners. There were two winners Miss Delta Kappa Chapter and Miss Black and Gold, who will represent the Chapter at conferences. Miss Delta Kappa Chapter 2019-2020 was Quanila Trotter and Miss Black and Gold 2019-2020 was Olecia James.
