On November 8, 2016 the Delta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated held its “Election Day Transportation to the Polls” service. This service offered on campus transportation for students between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm to the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex during the 2016 Presidential Election. Students were transported via the Alcorn State University (ASU) trolley and picked up during 30 minute intervals at several locations on campus. These locations included the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility, the James L. Bolden Student Union, the Math and Science Building and the Walter Washington Administration Building.
Patrice Briscoe, a Junior History Pre-Law major from Spring Hill, Tennessee says The Delta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated took this as a privilege and encouraged students, faculty and staff to catch a ride to the polls on this rainy Election Day.
“Delta’s have and will forever be about service. Being that our first public service act was the Women’s Suffrage March, getting the trolley to take students to vote was a great and important civic duty. As students, as women, as Americans, it is our job to exercise this right that was fought for by our ancestors,” said Briscoe.
This shuttle service made it more convenient for students whose primary goal was to get out and vote this election. Diamond Smith, a Nutrition Dietetics major from Crosby, Mississippi said she was beyond ecstatic to see a shuttle service provided for the sole purpose of transporting students to the polls to vote.
“I firmly believe in the importance of all individuals exercising their right to vote. Many students on campus do not have personal transportation. This shuttle service came just in the nick of time, allowing us to get out and let our voices be heard,” said Smith.
