On Monday, May 5th, the Myrlie Evers-Williams Honors Program presented Dr. Murry Shugars, Professor of English at Alcorn State University (ASU), with the MEW Honors Program Honors Faculty medal. This medal is presented to all Honors Faculty who teach honors courses. Honors classes are advanced classes that challenge the student academically and are tailored to a specific curriculum.
Dr. Shugars, this 2024 – 2025 academic year, taught two honors English classes: Fall 2024 Honors English EN 191 and Spring 2025 Honors English EN 192.
This was the first year that the MEW Honors Program has ever presented an honors faculty medal to a professor who has taught honors classes at Alcorn.
A student who has completed a minimum of 24 hours of honors course work, and who has maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 in honors and overall, may graduate with the designation of a Myrlie Evers-Williams Honors Scholar. In addition to the above requirements, the recipient of this distinction must be enrolled in a minimum of six hours of honors course work during at least three of the four undergraduate years.
Honors courses have not been offered at Alcorn for more than three years. Starting Fall 2024, Alcorn offered honors courses to high achieving students. High achieving students are defined as those who have an ACT score of 24 or above or at the end of any semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
