The Gamma Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. along with the Senior Class Cabinet hosted Goal Driven: A Resume Building Workshop on November 12th, in the Math and Science Building in Room 107. The importance of this event was to give Alcorn State University (ASU) students the opportunity to expand their knowledge on the importance of creating an effective resume.

The program began with a Welcome by Jazmin Green followed by the Introduction of the Speaker by Tytiana Smith. Karen Phillips of Karen’s Refined Resume and Business services was invited as the guest speaker. Phillips used her expertise to educate students on how to create a resume that will be appealing in various aspects of their career. She began by explaining the key differences between graduate school resumes, internship resumes, and job resumes and what each resume should contain. Phillips also explained to students that important parts of a resume include fonts, work experience, and key words that will draw an employer to remember their names.

Gamma Phi’s Chapter President, Makayla Wiley, explained how this event was enlightening by stating, “This event was extremely helpful by providing tips of having a superb resume for jobs and internships. Our speaker explained the reason why certain things should be restricted or included in regards of editing or composing your resume.”

Phillips concluded the event by pointing out that students should be versatile and be visible on various platforms to make themselves more marketable. A technique she honed in on was to create a LinkedIn so that employers can physically see that you are interested in a positive form of social media. The event concluded with a Question and Answer session that allowed students to ask Phillips about the do’s and don’ts of resume building.

Students were also able to get their resume reviewed during this portion of the event. Tytiana Smith, Senior Class President and member of the Gamma Phi Chapter, emphasized the importance of resume building events by stating, “As Senior Class President, my heart was full after the Resume Building Workshop, and I was so happy that my Chapter and Cabinet could bring such an amazing event to the students on campus because life after college is real and everyone deserves to have a superb resume.”
