Girl’s Coalition Holds Paint and Sip

On Monday, November 9th from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the James L. Bolden Campus Union in Room 7-8, Girl’s Coalition hosted a Paint and Sip with an event entitled, Adopt-A-Freshman.

Girl’s Coalition is an organization on Alcorn State University’s (ASU) campus that empowers and mentors young women in college. Tyriney Marshall, a Biology Pre-Med major from Waynesboro, Mississippi, and a member of the group stated, “I love the union and the sisterhood that we have.” Girl’s Coalition is separated into two groups, the upperclassman, who are referred to as Butterflies and the Freshman, who are referred to as Caterpillars. The Butterflies are there to help the Caterpillars with their transition through college.

In order to bring the Freshmen together the Executive Board and the President of Girl’s Coalition 2020-2021, Melody Evans, came up with Paint and Sip for the Adopt-A-Freshman event. While there, the Freshmen were served sparkling sider and water. “The purpose of the event is for the Freshman to be able to destress about everything going on such as COVID-19 and any other personal things that are going on in their lives,” stated Evans, a Senior Biochemistry major from Augusta, Georgia. The event helped the Butterflies and Caterpillars bond with one another by listening to music and painting things that are inspiring to help them get through these tough times.

By following the Center for Disease Control guidelines each participant practiced social distancing and wore their facial masks.
