IMPACT Makes an Impact During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As we all know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month also known as BCAM. During the 31 days of October, pink ribbons appear as Breast Cancer is brought to the forefront of national conversation.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. The stage was set for the evolution of the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon with Susan G. Komen as she has used the color pink since its inception in 1982. The first Komen Race for the Cure® logo design was an abstract female runner outlined with a pink ribbon and was used during the mid 1980s through the early 1990s.

For most people around the world, this month can be filled with a great deal of sadness because of the loved ones that were lost. In honor of everyone who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, survived Breast Cancer, or lost a loved one to it, the students at Alcorn State University (ASU) that are associated with the IMPACT Community Service Organization, designed an event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This event took place on Wednesday, October 11th, at 12:00 pm in the Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Hall at ASU. The event consisted of handing out sweet treats in significance of Breast Cancer, spreading awareness, and giving out a few sympathizing words for those who have lost someone to the disease. There were also other organizations in attendance that helped spread awareness such as ASU H.E.R.O.E.S. and the Nurses Association.

Kylie Victoria, President of IMPACT, stated, “We know that to help those facing Breast Cancer more has to be done. This October, get involved. Get screened. Make a donation and make this month more than days filled with awareness but days filled joy, understanding, and love.”
