On Monday, September 22nd, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Student Union, Room 208, Alcorn State University’s (ASU) Career Services Department hosted a Career Closet open house.
First impressions are everything in a world where one is always being perceived. This is especially important in professional settings. The Career Closet is a great outlet for both males and females to collect career-ready clothing. Students mainly use the platform for student life events such as career fairs, graduation, class presentations, traveling, informational fairs, and Greek life. All students are welcome during operating hours, which are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Having a resourceful place to depend on without having to travel far provides security to those who attend Alcorn. Michael Harper, Director of Career Services and Pre-Professional Programs at Alcorn stated, “It’s a great resource to have on campus.”
Everyone needs business professional and business casual attire. Students should remember that when in a professional setting, they should always dress to impress. Harper also mentioned the saying, “First impressions are lasting impressions,” meaning that the initial judgments from the perceiver can be hard to change later on in future interactions. Students should try their hardest to put their best foot forward when it is important to make a memorable impression.
Not only does the Career Closet help students with business clothing, but it also provides selected students with work study hours and directly connects them to alumni. Those who work there can provide and obtain peer-to-peer advice about how to dress successfully. Also, many alumni donate to the Career Closet to give students what they did not have during their attendance at ASU. This outreach to students can be used as a steppingstone for a prosperous future.
