As graduation approaches, Jamyiyah Cotten is making her final semester at Alcorn State University one to remember.
A Mass Communications major, Cotten has become a recognizable leader across campus through her involvement in athletics, student life, and service. As Co-Captain of the Alcorn State Softball team, she is known for her steady presence and ability to lead by example. Teammates describe her as someone who brings both accountability and encouragement, helping set the tone on and off the field.
Cotten’s leadership extends beyond athletics. She serves as President of the Delta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she plays a key role in organizing events, leading service initiatives, and mentoring fellow members. Balancing the responsibilities of Greek life, academics, and athletics is no small task, but Cotten has managed to excel in each area.
Last year, she was also named Miss Senior for the 2025–2026 school year, a title that reflects the respect she has earned from her peers. Known for her poise and presence, Cotten represents the spirit of her graduating class.
Her journey to this point has been shaped by experiences that required resilience early on. Growing up in a predominantly Caucasian community, Cotten often found herself navigating spaces where she stood out. As one of the only black players on her softball teams, she learned how to remain confident and focused, even in unfamiliar environments.
Those experiences helped shape the leader that she is today, someone who is adaptable, determined, and unafraid to take on new challenges.
As she prepares for life after graduation, Cotten is exploring career paths in Sports Marketing and Advertising, both of which align with her passion for sports and communication.
While her next chapter is still unfolding, Cotten’s impact on Alcorn State is already clear. Through her leadership, involvement, and dedication, she has left a lasting impression on the campus community.
