Mass Communications Department Holds 3rd Annual Meet and Greet

On Wednesday, September 28, 2016 the Mass Communications Department at Alcorn State University (ASU) held its 3rd Annual Meet and Greet in the Industrial Technology Building in Conference Room 1. The purpose of this event was for Freshman and Transfer students to better acquaint themselves with upperclassmen and members of the faculty and staff.

The Meet and Greet began with an inspirational prayer by Junior Broadcast/Mass Communications major Jamaica Linwood and afterwards Graduating Senior Broadcast/Mass Communications major Renita Lacy introduced the faculty and staff of the Department which consists of Dr. Babu Patlolla, Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Cynthia Scurria, Chair of the Department of English, Mass Communications and Foreign Languages, Hannah Nations, Secretary of the Department of English, Mass Communications and Foreign Languages, Dr. Jerry Domotob, Associate Professor of Mass Communications, Mrs. Toni Terrett, Associate Professor of Mass Communications, Dr. Eric Dogini, Associate Professor of Mass Communications, Larry Sanders, Instructor of Mass Communications, Curtis Aaron, Director of ASU TV-13, Charles Edmond, Operations Manager of WPRL 91.7 FM, Jerome Myles, Gospel Director of WPRL 91.7 FM, Myrtle Hedrick, Secretary of WPRL 91.7 FM, and Gemario Brooks, Producer/DJ on WPRL 91.7 FM. Each member did a brief introduction of themselves and discussed their specific fields and encouraged each student that attended to come speak with them at any time about their major. Keaundria Milloy, a Freshman Broadcast/Mass Communications major from Mount Olive, Mississippi stated, “In the meeting today, it was a great experience to meet all of the upperclassmen telling us how much they loved Mass Communications.”

After the introductions, Dr. Scurria spoke to the students about a plethora of items such as Alcorn’s radio station, WPRL 91.7 FM, ASU TV-13, Alcorn’s television station, The Campus Chronicle, Alcorn’s online campus newspaper, pre-registering for their classes, retrieving their alternate PIN numbers, completing an internship and also taking the proper steps to making certain that they graduate on time. She stated, “I’m always happy to see the participation in the Mass Communications students. This was a great meeting. We had at least thirty majors here today and that’s outstanding.”

The meeting ended with a question and answer segment which gave the Freshmen and Transfer students an opportunity to ask the upperclassmen, faculty and staff about the Department. Jocelyn Taylor, Miss Mass Communications 2016-2017, stated, “I really enjoyed meeting all of the new students in our Department. I look forward to mentoring them in the near future.”
