Mass Communications Launches Honor Society

Alcorn State University’s Mass Communication Department is proud to announce the launch of its first National Communication Honor Society. The Alpha Chi Alpha Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta became active on Alcorn’s campus October 3, 2016. Lambda Pi Eta, established in 1985, is the official undergraduate National Communication Honor Society of the National Communication Association (NCA).  There are over 600 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide.

The goals of Lambda Pi Eta are to: recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement; stimulate interest in the field of Communication, promote and encourage professional development among communication majors, provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the field, establish and maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and students, and explore options for further graduate studies.

It was Dr. Eric Dogini, Associate Professor of Mass Communications, who took the initiative to start the organization after realizing nearly every department on campus had an honors society except the Mass Communication Department. He believes the new organization will become the academic achievement that all communication students will strive for. “Every student wants to be a member of Lambda Pi Eta. This will motivate those students who do not yet qualify, to go the extra mile academically,” said Dogini.

Renita Lacy, a Senior Mass Communications major from Camden, Mississippi believes the new honor society is great and long overdue. “We need an organization here on campus that will recognize and reward students who are doing well within the Mass Communications department. It will also serve as an incentive for other students to want to excel in their classes. I am very excited that we are starting a chapter here and I look forward to what’s to come,” said Lacy.

To qualify for membership in the Alpha Chi Alpha Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, students must have completed at least 60 semester hours of college credits, 12 hours in Communications, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0, a GPA of 3.25 in Communications, be in good standing with the University, and display commitment to the field of Communications.
