The accolades for the Alcorn State University Braves’ Football Team just keep coming. On Tuesday, February 23, 2016 the Mississippi House of Representatives celebrated the Braves winning the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship.
In honor of the Braves’ accomplishments the House of Representatives completed a legislative action called House Concurrent Resolution 58. In this Bill it commended and congratulated the team for their 2015 SWAC Football Championship and Inaugural Celebration Bowl appearance. The Bill was signed and passed into law on February 23, 2016.
The Braves’ 2015 season was indeed a stellar one. They finished 7-2 in the SWAC East upon which they won and had a 9-4 overall record. They won the SWAC title by beating Grambling 49-21 before a nationally televised audience. With that win the Braves became Back to Back SWAC Champions (2014 and 2015). They then went on to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies in the Inaugural Celebration Bowl in front of a nationally televised audience as well. Unfortunately the Braves came up short losing to the Aggies 41-34. Even with the loss the Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) Black College Football Poll had the Braves ranked number two in the country at the end of the 2015 season.
The Braves will continue their wave of success on March 5, 2016 with an event called the ‘Celebration of Champions’ which will be held on the Lorman campus. The event will begin with a parade from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm from Bowles Hall to the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex. Afterwards the ‘Celebration of Champions’ will take place from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm at Spinks-Casem Stadium. Individuals attending the event should enter through the visitor’s side entrance at gates 12-14. Everyone is invited to attend.
