On Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Dumas Hall in Room 107, the Alcorn State University (ASU) Chapter of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hosted their membership drive.

This was the first membership drive for the organization for the Spring 2019 school semester which resulted in a great turnout. The NAACP is a Civil Rights organization founded in 1909 to fight prejudice, bigotry, and segregation, and to work for the betterment of people of color. The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

Chapter President Hudson Partlow expressed his pleasure with the turnout stating, “It’s great to see students find interest in the organization, and we were able to come up with our primary focus for the semester which will be Knowledge and Cohesion.”

The NAACP Chapter plans to host a new members drive and chapter meeting once every month so the flow of new ideas and events can be fluent as the organization plans to show its impact on the campus this school year. Member Chris Garrett stated, “The NAACP has been working diligently behind the scenes not only recruiting for new members but also coming up with ideas so that the student body knows who we are as an organization and the awareness we are bringing to our fellow student body on the campus.”
