Greek life is alive and well on the campus of Alcorn State University and to show the student body the comradery between the Greeks the University’s National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC) celebrated its “NPHC Week 2016” this week beginning on Monday, April 25, 2016. Organizational participants of the week included Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
The week’s activities kicked off on Monday, April 25th with Greek Games on the Green. Attendees were able to participate in relay games and partake in fellowship with various NPHC members while enjoying good food prepared by members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. There was also a dunking booth where students could dunk some of their favorite Greeks on campus. The field day like gathering quickly turned into a party on the Green.
Tuesday, April 26th’s event was an award’s banquet attended by members of the NPHC. The awards given were based on merit, service, grade point averages, and dedication. Director of Student Engagement, Devina Hogan, gave her infamous “Who Runs the Yard?” award to the deserving fraternity of Omega Psi Phi and sorority of Zeta Phi Beta for the last time. From now on the award will be given by the Assistant Director of Student Engagement, James Durant.
At the closing of the banquet, the 2015-2016 NPHC President Jonathon Hood (Omega Psi Phi member) welcomed Chelsea Hall (Alpha Kappa Alpha member) into the new position of President for the 2016-2017 academic year.
Unfortunately due to inclement weather and unforeseen circumstances the NPHC decided to cancel the “Wipe Me Down Car Wash” which was to be held on Wednesday, April 25th behind the Amenities Building, the “Greek Kickback Scandal” which was to be held at the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium and the “Alcorn Prom” which was to be held in the Ball Room at the James L. Bolden Campus Union.
