Each year the fraternities and sororities at Alcorn State University (ASU) hosts one full week dedicated to service. The week of September 24th – 29th , was hosted by the Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi.
The Omega’s kicked off their week with “Chapel Service with the Bruhz” at Oakland Chapel on ASU’s campus on Sunday, September 24th. The service started at 10:30 am and the sermon was given by Senior English/Literature major and Brother of Omega Psi Phi, Lamar Scott. Scott, who is no stranger to the pulpit, stated, “This was my second time preaching for Omega Week and it was an exciting and humbling experience.”
On Monday, September 25th there was a “Day Party” located on the Campus Plaza from 6:oo pm – 10:00 pm. The ‘Ques’ brought out the grills and provided students around campus with some delicious barbecue chicken and burgers. Ryan Walker, aka “DJ Stigga Savage”, an Omega Psi Phi Brother, was there to give the party a variety of vibes. Tori Spann, a Senior Business Administration major, stated, “I certainly enjoyed the food a lot. The ‘Ques’ displayed great hospitality.” The day party was a great way for students to eat and engage in intimate conversations with the Brothers of the organization.
Tuesday, September 26th, the ‘Ques’ put on a “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) seminar followed by “Midnight Breakfast with The Bruhz”. Natchez, Mississippi native and motivational speaker, Desmond Hammond, came and spoke at the BLM seminar in the J.D. Boyd Library Auditorium where he talked about leadership within in the black community. Later that night, the Omegas took their services behind Alcorn’s bookstore and provided those midnight food lovers with some quality breakfast. Senior Business Administration major, Ebony Thomas stated, “The breakfast was very innovative because all of it was made on the grill. It was exceptionally good.”
Wednesday, September 27th was dedicated to “Hop Like A Que”. This is an event that allowed female students around campus to emulate the Omega’s stepping techniques. This year, there were a total of 3 groups who participated. Alij Tapp, a Physical Therapy major and Omega Psi Phi member expressed, “I think it was a fun experience for the young ladies as well as us. I was glad to be a part of it.”
On Thursday, September 28th, at 8:00 pm in the James L. Bolden Campus Ballroom the 2017 Ms. Omega Psi Phi Pageant was held. The contestants were Katelyn Wilson, Alexandria Riley, Jalesa Jones and Jaylo Hodo. Katelyn Wilson, a Sophomore Biology/Pre Nursing major, from Columbus, Mississippi and the 2017 Ms. Omega Psi Phi Pageant winner stated, “Anything is possible if you believe.”
To conclude Omega Week 2017, on Friday, September 29th the Omegas orchestrated a Voter’s Registration Drive. During the drive, the ‘Ques’ worked diligently to get people registered to vote. Aaron Tatum, Basileus of the Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, stated, “I believe Omega Week has been a great success. We’ve had excellent participation for each activity. We enjoyed serving homemade breakfast at our “Midnight Breakfast” event, as well as providing an entertaining show for students at “Hop Like A Que”. It is our pleasure to provide students with engaging events and activities and we will continue to have them as long as students keep supporting us like they always have. God bless the Braves!”
